Growing between one and eight feet tall depending on tidal position, it thrives where few other plants survive. The leaves excrete excess salt through specialized glands, and hollow stems carry oxygen down through the waterlogged, anaerobic mud to the root zone.

Salt Meadow Cordgrass (Spartina patens)
Salt meadow cordgrass covers the high marsh in fine, dense mats. Fish

Shellfish
Quahogs, oysters, soft-shell clams, bay scallops, and mussels inhabit the tidal flats and channel margins of the marsh. Commercial oyster operations are visible from kayaks in certain sections of the marsh interior. Conservation Pressures Facing Nauset Marsh
Sea Level Rise
Sea level rise is the most significant long-term threat to Nauset Marsh wildlife. Research conducted within Cape Cod National Seashore documented the loss of more than 190 acres of high marsh vegetation between 1984 and 2013, while over 130 acres of low marsh formed in compensating areas. Near the Salt Pond Visitor Center alone, the marsh lost more than 52 acres of high marsh habitat during that period.
High marsh and low marsh support entirely different plant and animal communities. The dense salt meadow cordgrass and glasswort used by nesting Saltmarsh Sparrows, reptiles, and small mammals does not simply move upward; it is replaced by open water or low marsh where those species cannot survive.
A 2022 multi-agency report coordinated by NOAA projected that sea levels along the U.S. coastline will rise 10 to 14 inches over the following 30 years, with moderate coastal flooding expected to occur more than ten times as frequently as today. Smooth cordgrass has a partial defense: its root mats trap suspended sediment, and the marsh surface can accrete vertically over time. Invasive Marsh Crabs
Green crabs, introduced from Europe in the 1800s, are well established in the marsh and have long been a management concern. Research has linked their burrowing and feeding activity to destruction of cordgrass root systems, accelerating the marsh dieback process that sea level rise also drives.
